How to stop your Mac sleeping during a download
Make sure large downloads finish while you're away.
Last updated October 23, 2026
When a Mac goes to sleep, its downloads pause, and big ones often fail. To keep a download going, keep your Mac awake until it's done: with Pulsida, set a timer that covers the download, let the screen sleep, and walk away.
Step by step
- 1
Start the download
In any app.
- 2
Open Pulsida
Click the pulse in your menu bar.
- 3
Let the screen sleep
Set Display to Can sleep to save power.
- 4
Set a timer and start
Choose a time that covers the download, then click the power button.
- Plug in for big ones
- Long downloads go faster and safer on power. If you are on battery, Pulsida's safety cutoff stops closed-lid mode at 10%.
- Close the lid if you need to
- Turn on Closed lid and you can take your Mac with you while it downloads.

Questions and answers
Do downloads continue when a Mac is asleep?
Usually not. Most downloads pause when your Mac sleeps and some fail completely. Keeping your Mac awake avoids that.
How long should I set the timer for?
Pick a time a bit longer than the download needs. When it runs out, your Mac goes back to sleeping normally.
